NEWSONE PACKAGES TO BE FED DURING THE OLYMPICS:

Because of the time of events in Korea, we are planning on providing packages at the following times during the Olympics:

  • Weekdays: Early Morning newscasts (4:30 am ET), Midday newscasts (12:00 noon ET), Late newscasts (11:00 pm ET)

  • Weekends: Early Morning Newscasts (6:00 am ET), Afternoon newscasts (5:00 pm ET), Late newscasts (11:00 pm ET)

NOTE: On the first day of Olympic competition, Thursday, February 8, NewsOne will do a package for Late newscasts only.  Starting on Friday, February 9, through Sunday, February 25, we will feed 3 packages a day at the times listed above.

NOTES ABOUT HOW NBC’S USAGE RULES IMPACT NEWSONE PACKAGES:

  • Depending on the time of day and what time NBC’s primetime coverage goes off the air each night of the Olympics, our packages will include some combination of NBC Olympic video and AP still photos.  (See the “OLYMPIC FOOTAGE AND STILLS USAGE NOTES” section below for more details.)

  • NBC network primetime Olympic coverage is scheduled to go off the air at various times depending on the day.  On some nights, coverage is scheduled to end at 11:00 pm ET.  On other nights, coverage is scheduled to end at 11:30 pm ET or later.

  • All Early Morning packages will include no more than 30 seconds of NBC Olympic video from the previous day.

  • All Midday packages (on weekdays) and Afternoon packages (on weekends) will most like be primarily AP stills, though we may use some NBC Olympic video from the previous day if warranted.  If we use NBC Olympic video in the Midday (on weekdays) or Afternoon package (on weekends), we will use no more than 30 seconds.

  • Late packages on days when NBC is scheduled to go off the air at 11:00 pm ET will contain no more than 1 minute of NBC Olympic video from the same day.  Late packages on days when NBC is scheduled to go off the air at 11:30 pm ET or later will NOT contain any NBC Olympic video.

  • Due to NBC’s requirements about the combined amount of video that can be aired on ABC affiliates during morning news and evening news time periods, NewsOne will not use more than 30 seconds of NBC video in any NewsOne package.  (See the “OLYMPIC FOOTAGE AND STILLS USAGE NOTES” section below for more details.)

  • Many of our packages will be voiced by ABC’s Alex Stone from PyeongChang.  Some of the packages will have other voices.

  • Packages may also contain elements about the Olympics that are not related to the actual competition (for example, news stories related to the Olympics or individual athletes).

  • NewsOne will also be feeding other items related to the Olympics throughout the Games, including any ABC News interviews with Olympic athletes, features or interviews on the Olympics done by ABC stations, and other Olympic related-material we may have access to from our partners.

  • All items related to the Olympics fed by NewsOne will be available in the “SPORTS” and “OLYMPICS” tabs in NewsOneNET.

OLYMPIC FOOTAGE AND STILLS USAGE NOTES:

USE OF NBC OLYMPIC VIDEO:

Video from each day’s Olympics NBC telecasts cannot be aired by ABC stations until after the NBC Television Network primetime telecast ends in that time zone.

ABC stations can only air NBC Olympic video for 24 hours after the video could first be first used.  (For example, video that airs on NBC on a day when NBC’s primetime coverage ends at 11:00 pm ET can only be used until 11:00 pm ET the next day—24 hours later).

The following video credit must be displayed over any excerpts of NBC Olympic video for the duration of the clip: “Courtesy NBC Olympics.”  You may not alter, eliminate or otherwise change the bug on any NBC Olympic video.

The full usage guidelines from NBC have been sent as a separate e-mail.  You can also access them here

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF OLYMPIC VIDEO STATIONS CAN AIR EACH DAY:

NBC guidelines allow stations to air only 2:00 maximum of Olympic video from the previous day in the 5:00 am to 10:00 am block each day.  This block includes local newscasts and “Good Morning America.”  “Good Morning America” is planning to air no more than 1:30 of Olympic video each day under the NBC guidelines.  We are advising stations to plan on airing no more than 0:30 (30 seconds) of Olympic video in your early morning local newscasts each day.  NewsOne will be offering a daily Olympics wrap package for early morning newscasts that will contain no more than 30 seconds of Olympic video from the day before.

NBC guidelines allow stations to air only 2:00 maximum of Olympic video from the previous day in the 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm block each day.  This block includes local newscasts and “World News Tonight.” “World News Tonight” is NOT planning to air any Olympics video under the NBC guidelines.  This means that local stations are free to air up to 2:00 of Olympic video in your local newscasts between 4:00 pm and 7:30 pm ET.

USE OF AP OLYMPIC STILLS:

  • NewsOne will be using AP stills for our coverage of the Olympics.

  • These stills will always be used only within a NewsOne package.

  • These stills cannot be excerpted by stations.

  • Stations wanting to use these stills in their newscasts must air the NewsOne package, or re-track the NewsOne package.

  • Stations may not pull the stills out of the NewsOne package and air them without a track.

  • Stills may not be used on a station’s website or other digital platforms in any form.

  • STATIONS MAY WANT TO CONSULT THEIR OWN AP DEAL FOR OTHER POTENTIAL USES OR RESTRICTIONS OF AP STILLS
